Description

Kamijo is a student in Academy City, where people use science to develop supernatural abilities. The guy's got a lot of heart – luckily for a young nun named Index. She's on the run from a sorcery society that covets the astonishing 103,000 volumes of magical knowledge stored in her memory. When Index stumbles into Kamijo's life, she find a faithful friend and protector, and while Kamijo's easily the weakest kid in Academy City, he's got something else going for him: the Imagine Breaker, an unexplainable power stored in his right hand that negates the powers of others. With scientists and sorcerers attacking from all sides, the Imagine Breaker will definitely come in handy – but it's Kamijo's loyalty to Index that will be his greatest weapon in the fight to keep her safe.

Editorial Review

Toma Kamijo, the hapless hero of the fantasy-adventure A Certain Magical Index (2008), lives in Academy City, where more than 2 million kids are trained to use their psi powers. Toma has no psychic abilities, but his right hand is an “imagine breaker” that nullifies any abnormal or magical power he comes in contact with. His ordinary student life is interrupted by the appearance of Sister Index, who has committed more than 100,000 grimoires (magical textbooks) to memory. The Church of the Necessary Evil, a powerful magic organization, both fears and covets the knowledge those books contain. Having taken Index in, Toma tries to protect her from two sorcerers who are seeking to erase her memory. A magical feather somehow erases all of Toma's memories, forcing him to ad-lib daily life. A Certain Magical Index combines elements of the magical girl and harem comedy genres, but the story meanders as aimlessly as one of Index's explanations. Toma defeats an evil alchemist, then takes on an extremely powerful esper and a few of her many clones, who were created in an illicit military experiment. The filmmakers don't seem to know what's actually going on, and the viewer must go along for the ride with an agreeable cast of characters. Practicing Catholics may find some of the religious references offensive: Index's name is short for Index Librorum Prohibitorum, the list of books forbidden by the Church; her robe is supposedly a replica of the Shroud of Turin. It's meant to be harmless fun, but Magical Index would be more entertaining if it had a coherent plot. (Rated TV 14: violence, violence against women, nudity, alcohol and tobacco use, potentially offensive religious imagery) –Charles Solomon
