All men die but not all live today you made me feel alive, Jose-Maria Olazabal, September 30, 2012.
European Ryder Cup captain Olazabal was speaking for a continent. Once again the Ryder Cup had delivered the most extraordinary sporting drama. His side had pulled off the greatest comeback in the competition s glory laden history.
Four points behind going into the final day singles, Europe were up against a brilliant and super confident American team, captained by Davis Love III and backed by a furiously partisan Chicago crowd.
But inspired by the imperious Ian Poulter and playing for the spirit of their talisman Severiano Ballesteros, Europe refused to accept the seemingly inevitable. That final day is arguably the greatest day of golf ever played; heroes in blue everywhere as Europe triumphed 14 and a half to 13 and a half to complete the Miracle of Medinah.
So Europe retained the trophy they had won back in incredible fashion two years earlier in Wales. Then it was Captain Colin Montgomerie who led his side to the most dramatic of victories. It took four epic days to separate the two sides at a sodden Celtic Manor.
Finally it was the US Open Champion, Graeme McDowell who claimed his place in Ryder Cup legend; a nerveless late birdie in the very last match sealing a one point success for Europe.
The Ryder Cup matches of 2010 and 2012 the very best that this remarkable, incredible competition has to offer and now together on Blu Ray.
